Advanced REAPER Recording Setting
Hello noobsters, welcome to the 8th tutorial of audio editing basics with reapar. In the last tutorial I went through the configuration needed to start recording in repair depending on 3 common hardware setups. today I will continue talking about reaper configuration to improve your recordings.
Apple computers have a better audio support than windows which makes them easier to use for audio production right out of the box. To gain this professional audio capabilities a Windows user must install some drivers to improve the audio quality and reduce the latency. I am not going to be very technical here, so the bottom line is if you are using a Windows computer and you want to improve the quality of your recordings among other improvements you must install ASIO drivers that usually come with your professional soundcard. If your card does not come with ASIO drivers you have the option to install ASIO4all, a free generic version of it. I advise you to post the video here Google asio4all download and install the software, then reopen reaper and in the audio device settings window, click on the right side of the menu bar to open it, select ASIO now open ASIO4ALL panel to enable input and output. Seems from this moment it will control your audio devices. Please understand that you will never use asio4all by itself but always from inside other programs typically audio and video production software.
Tips #1 Better ASIO Usage
One downside of using asio4all is that you cannot use as your software like reaper and non ASIO software like Firefox at the same time, this can make difficult certain situations for example following this tutorial, but there is a tweak that can help you.
Open again reaper's audio device settings and you see, then select the audio menu on the left, now check the first box close audio device when stopped and application is inactive. Now everytime reaper window is minimized or just loses the focus asio4all will disconnect itself and allow other applications to work with audio. If you still have problems working with asio4all and your web browser at the same time you can even download this tutorials to watch them offline and close Firefox or even better you can watch them inside repair, have a look, insert media file, this is a movie, and here is the movie, to see the video just go to view video window, with this way you don't have to get out of reaper to follow this tutorial.
Tips #2 Handling 'peak' files
Reaper generates files called "peaks" which have no use for you at all, they are harmless and can be deleted anytime but it has the annoying habit of putting them everywhere. If you edited audio before you must have seen them. So to avoid that I created a folder inside my audio projects directory. Let's have a look, this folder is called rea peaks repair big files in my case and here is where all this big files are stored, you see, so I keep them out of my way. This is a cleaner the way to work.
So to do that in reaper preferences go to general > paths and click on this box to store all peak caches in alternate path and browse to the selected folder you want to use. This will make your project's cleaner.
Tips #3 Recording With Metronome
If you want to use a metronome for recording go to the main toolbar at the left of the timeline and click on the metronome button to activate it. Have a look, if you want to access the metronome options right click on it and then you can change its volume, when will be active, pre-roll options and more. The metronom sample is saved the transfer bar and as you can see the default, have a look here, the default is 120 beats per minute just click to change the speed of the session.
Tips #4 Faster Recording Using Templates
To save time everything you want to record something without need to open reaper create and arm a tracks, configure input, etc. you can do the following :
- open repair and create a project or use this empty default project and configure it the way you want for example with a single track to record
- go to the menu bar, find project templates > save project as template
- give it a name
- save it in your desktop, and close reaper.
Now double-click the file you just saved and press recording. That's all I am recording now.
Tips #5 Get Help With Reaper Problems
Open your browser and go to raeper.fm, from there go to forums and create a username - create an account here. This is a great place to get help in case you find yourself is stucked with some technical difficulties, there is a lot of people there to help you and usually the answers come very fast.
Have a look, there is subforums for almost any option you can imagine for Mac users, compatibility, different languages : French, Spanish, Portuguese, Italian, German, recording technology MIDI (which I will cover in next series of tutorials), for people new to reaper, etc.
Tips #6 Keep watching the ambient sound and noises
Find the best possible room to record audio, test different locations and keep your computer as far as you can from your microphone. Improving the acoustics of the room and minimizing other Ambien noises is far more important than you think.
In this tutorial I explore some different options and system tweaks that can improve the quality of your recordings and also the speed and ease of your workflow write any comments or suggestions below .
